Get Information on Ferret

Ferret is a domesticated animal belonging to the “Mustaelidae” family which is the same group under which the Polecat and the weasel are categorized. On an average the Ferret would be just about 20 inches in length and around 2 pounds in weight.

It is said that they have been kept as pets for as long as 2500 years. The word Ferret is derived from the Latin word “furittus” which means little thief. Where Ferrets and polecats co-exist, hybridization is a very natural phenomenon so much so that it has become a cause for concern in certain places. New Zealand is one such example where the ferret population is so high that it has become a threat to other small animals and birds.

There is evidence to prove that the Ferret was used to hunt rabbits in the earlier days by the Romans and the tradition continues till date in some parts of the world but in most places they are kept merely as Pets. Places like UK and Australia still use the Ferret for Hunting rabbits but some other countries consider the whole act illegal as they believe that using it to hunt other animals is likely to cause an ecological imbalance.

Ferrets were rarely kept as pets in the United States but this changed around the 1980s. Dr Wendy Winstead who was a veterinarian has contributed a lot towards propagating ferrets as Pets. They are usually inactive during the day and sleep for about 18 hours and around dusk is when their activity level increases and then they are difficult to be stopped as they would want to venture out of their cage and explore their surroundings to satisfy their curiosity. The natural characteristic of nesting makes them take away small objects and hide the same.

Their excitement is shown by jumping around which is generally known as weasel war dance and this is just an expression of the thrill and not a cause for concern. Young Ferrets generally tend to nip (bite) but this is done because they are teething so the nip may at times be a little hard but the older ones never do that and even if they do it would be a very gentle act. Only if they have been harmed or are in severe pain do they tend to bite which might be quite severe.

As far as their diet is concerned the Animal is a complete carnivore and survives on meat but some people also tend to give their pets processed food available in the market which is adequate so long as it takes care of their fat and protein rich diet. Ferrets tend to develop a liking for sweets but this should be restricted as this can later cause harm to the animal.

Ferrets are used for purposes such as running wires through long conduits and are also used extensively for medical research. It is a good pet to have provided you are aware of all that is required when you keep it at home.
