The company was established by Thomas and Andrew Parkinson in 1989, both of whom are executive officers till now. The original name of Peapod was Information and Product on Demand (IPOD), but it was creating its business cards, it changed the name to Peapod on an urge.

Earlier in 1996, it offered an online grocery shipping service in affiliation with Jewel in Chicago and its surrounding towns including Safeway in California, San Francisco; Randall’s in Texas, Houston and Kroger in Ohio, Columbus.

The company launched its web site in 1996 and it became one of the most primitive Internet start-ups. Peapod made Inc. 500 lists of the fast growing privately owned organizations in United States of America. It parlayed this achievement and good press into a NASDAQ on IPO. Between 1997 and 2001, the company extended into Watertown, Boston, Massachusetts, New York, Long Island and Norwalk Connecticut in affiliation with Stop & Shop. Late in 2001, the company entered in Washington, DC and its surrounding towns in partnership with Giant Food.

The year 2000 was an important year in the history of Peapod; it made a lot of changes in the corporate structure of the company. Royal Ahold, a worldwide grocery giant, purchased fifty one percents shares of Peapod in June 2000 and after one year and two months in August 2001, they purchased the entire company. So, Peapod terminated all of its contracts with grocery companies apart from two main chains of America Giant Food and Stop & Shop of Royal Ahold.

Service Model of the company: - The company has one centralized distribution model with tow designs- fast-pick center/wareroom and warehouse. Both these formats provide next day delivery to their customers, exploiting on a supply series that keeps the cold series intact with customers.
