Get Information on Skis

A ski is a flat board which the wearer wears on his feet to slide over snow smoothly. The initial use of Skis was to help move about in snow comfortably but nowadays it is used mainly as a sporting activity. The pressure applied by the wearer and the heat produced by the surface due to the friction is the cause for the snow to melt a little and this layer helps in the smooth movement on the snow.

Skis date back to nearly about 5000 years. In the olden days they were made of wood but now you will find a large variety like that made of Kevlar, glass fiber and titanium. Skis are very long and are pointed upwards at the end. This helps in it not getting stuck in the snow and causing an accident. There are bindings on the ski which helps to keep your feet fixed.

There are various types of Skis available in the market today. Alpine skis were the earliest which were made of wood alone and then in the later versions it had metal edges. Later on composite materials were used to make these Skis the benefits of which was that they are more durable and far lighter. Then there are the twin tip skis which are pointed upwards at both ends making it possible to go backwards more easily which is very essential during aerial maneuvers. The monoski is a very broad ski and both feet are attached on a single board. They are almost double the width of normal Skis. It is mostly used by ski enthusiasts and is made by few companies and only a few pieces are manufactured. The alpine touring ski is another type of ski which is mainly designed to ski on unbroken snow. The cross country ski is a very light one and unlike usual bindings where the feet are locked both at the toe and heel here it is done only at the toe. The Telemark Ski is similar to the cross country ski as it is bound only at the toe and the waist of the ski is turned inwards which is the first of its kind making it very easy to turn. Then there is also the mogul Skis which is used for mogul skiing where the skier has to go on or around bumps in the snow.

Skiing is a sport taken up by most living in cold climates. Many take it up professionally but there are those who enjoy it as a recreational activity. During the Winter Olympic Games this is a big attraction. There are many ski schools that teach the art of skiing as it is a very technical sport that requires thorough knowledge. Goggles, helmets, ski poles, jackets and ski boots are essential to start skiing. Using good quality Skis and ski gear are important or else chances of hurting yourself are far greater. You have to take every safety precaution and ensure that you have professional help at hand.
